Kapsch TrafficCom delivers toll projects on Spanish highway

- New system shortens waiting times for users
- Lower risk of fraud in transit payments
Madrid, September 2, 2025 – Kapsch TrafficCom is proud to announce the successful delivery of two major toll infrastructure renovation projects on the AP-8 motorway in Gipuzkoa, Basque Country, in Northern Spain.
These projects, executed in collaboration with Construcciones Amenabar, S.A. for Bidegi, the provincial infrastructure agency in Gipuzkoa, mark a significant milestone in enhancing the efficiency and user experience of toll operations in the region. With the renovated toll plazas, over two million inhabitants of the Basque Country and two million tourists per year will benefit from better road infrastructure.
The increased toll capacity shortens the time that drivers have to wait at the toll plaza. This allows drivers to make faster trips, bringing them to their destinations in less time and more reliably. Additionally, they will benefit from more payment types they can use, and payments will have a reduced risk of fraud for both the operator and the user.
“We are thrilled to see these projects come to fruition and contribute to the modernization of toll infrastructure in Gipuzkoa,” says Carolin Treichl, EVP EMEA at Kapsch TrafficCom. “That way, we are significantly reducing waiting times for citizens and tourists at the toll plazas.”
The projects encompassed the modernization of toll stations at Irún Ventas, Irún M/O, and Orio. With a combined total of 24 lanes, the upgrades were designed to ensure smoother passage for motorists and lay the groundwork for future technological advancements in toll collection.
- Irún Ventas: 8 lanes, including 2 bi-directional lanes. The station now features a special gantry, paving the way for a potential transition to Multi Lane Free-Flow (MLFF) tolling technology.
- Irún M/O: 10 lanes.
- Orio: 6 lanes, including 2 bi-directional lanes.
In addition, the incorporation of new technologies in both hardware and software will allow a greater degree of automation in payment methods, increasing their processing capacity, improving the user experience, facilitating their use and reducing waiting times in the payment process. The lanes are prepared to operate dynamically (TAG device reading), manually (with a toll collector) and also automatically (with an automatic toll machine), in which case payment can be implemented by mobile phone, credit card (complying with EMV Contactless standard) or in cash. The interactive elements with user-friendly and more effective, with a positive impact on travel time and traffic flow in the toll area.
The projects were completed on schedule by the end of November 2024. This achievement builds upon Kapsch TrafficCom’s extensive track record in Gipuzkoa. The company previously completed the Irún Barrera and Zarautz projects in 2019 and 2022, respectively, which successfully addressed the demands of high-volume traffic in the region.
