Kapsch TrafficCom to modernize three toll stations in Gipuzkoa, Spain

• The company will renew tolling technology at Eskoriatza, Zestoa-Zumaia and Elgoibar
• Projects focus on automation, smoother traffic flow and remote toll management
• SmartToll technology supports future migration toward Multi-Lane Free-Flow tolling

Bilbao, Spain, 21 July 2026 – Kapsch TrafficCom was awarded three projects to modernize tolling infrastructure in Gipuzkoa, Basque Country.

The projects cover the renewal of toll collection equipment at the Eskoriatza, Zestoa-Zumaia and Elgoibar toll plazas, strengthening the company’s role as a technology partner for advanced tolling solutions in the region.

Across all three projects, the objective is to update tolling installations to current technology requirements, make the systems easier and more user-friendly, and improve traffic flow by reducing waiting times at the toll plazas. The projects also reflect a broader trend toward higher levels of automation in tolling.

The Kapsch SmartToll solution combines DSRC technology, OCR or license plate cameras, automatic payment machines and remote management functionality. This supports the introduction of more automated tolling processes and creates a basis for possible future migration toward Multi-Lane Free-Flow tolling.

Eskoriatza

At the Eskoriatza toll station, Kapsch TrafficCom will partially renew the equipment across eight lanes, covering four entry and four exit lanes. The scope includes the installation, renovation and relocation of payment machines, lane cabinets, dynamic poles, OCR cameras, context cameras, ETC antennas and height barriers, as well as additional technology integration. The contract value is EUR 1.3 million with a duration of 12 months. The project started in March 2026.

Zestoa-Zumaia

At Zestoa-Zumaia, the company will carry out a full renewal of the tolling equipment. The total contract value is EUR 3.2 million, with Kapsch and civil works company Amenabar each accounting for 50 percent of the project. The duration is 18 months and the project starts in July 2026.

Elgoibar

At Elgoibar, Kapsch TrafficCom will also support a full renewal of the tolling area. The contract value is EUR 5.95 million with Kapsch accounting for 40 percent and Amenabar for 60 percent. The project duration is 16 months and it also starts in July 2026.

Kapsch TrafficCom was selected due to its deep knowledge of the infrastructure, its experience from previous renewals on the same highway, and the strength of its proposal.
