The rapid increase in vehicle connectivity means that more and more data is being generated which can be used for the road charging and tolling. Now, with introduction of 5G, the building blocks for the next generation of road pricing solutions based on vehicle location data are all in place.

This is significant because, around the world, authorities are facing ever increasing challenges caused by road traffic. As the number of kilometres/miles driven each year continues to grow, traffic congestion, road surface conditions, and air quality are getting steadily worse.

Kapsch TrafficCom's location-based charging solutions give authorities a unique set of technology, service, and business capabilities to enable them to respond to these challenges. They use data from global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) to locate and track the exact position of vehicles.

This data comes from multiple sources including smartphones, our specialised onboard units (OBUs), aftermarket telematics devices or, increasingly, connected vehicles themselves.

We provide all the core building blocks to enable a truly trip-based pricing approach. We can also integrate a location-based road charging capability within existing mobility solutions thanks to our uniquely broad experience of all the different technologies that are used for tolling, including video, DSRC, RFID, and GNSS. Moreover, all our solutions are fully compliant with local and regional data protection legislation and data vendor agnostic.

Each location based solution is part of a broader end-to-end satellite system

Support for different priorities and requirements

Road authorities might share common challenges, but their priorities and requirements are always different.

With our solutions, how distance-based charges are calculated and charged is entirely up to the authority. Different charges can be set for different types of vehicles for specific roads in specific areas, or at specific times of the day. This critical flexibility means that authorities can choose, adapt, and refine their solution to deliver the best approach for their individual circumstances and priorities. They can, for example, target fees at polluting vehicles only, or all vehicles driving at particularly congested times or in congested areas.

Experience matters

Kapsch TrafficCom is one of the world’s most experienced providers of location-based tolling solutions, with a unique set of technology, service and business capabilities.

Satellite tolling

The next generation Kapsch TrafficCom satellite tolling solution delivers nationwide schemes to collect tolls over dedicated road networks.  Because it uses satellite positioning data, rather than an extensive roadside infrastructure, the solution is extremely economical. It works with both dedicated and existing aftermarket and in-vehicle hardware to deliver a future proof approach to truck and light vehicle tolling.

Road user charging

The Kapsch TrafficCom road user charging (RUC) solution is a versatile tool for addressing the road tax deficits that are being caused by the growth in hybrid, electric and high efficiency vehicles. It can be configured to apply different prices according to numerous criteria such as time of day, location, vehicle type and size and emissions class.
