Kapsch TrafficCom supplies toll collection system for Melbourne, Australia

- New infrastructure reduces travel times by up to 35 minutes
- Barrier-free tollway to remove thousands of trucks from local roads
- Kapsch TrafficCom to deliver system by 2028 and operate for ten years
Melbourne, VIC, August 7, 2025 – Kapsch TrafficCom is proud to announce that it was selected by the State Tolling Corporation (STC) to deliver and operate the tolling infrastructure for the North East Link (NEL) Tollway in Melbourne, Victoria.
The NEL Tollway, a key component of Victoria’s Big Build (an AUD 90 billion infrastructure initiative), connects the M80 Ring Road to the Eastern Freeway via 6.5 kilometers of tunnels. The tollway will reduce travel times by up to 35 minutes and also remove up to 15,000 trucks from local roads daily, improving air quality and safety for local communities.
Daniel Vazquez, EVP APAC at Kapsch TrafficCom, comments on the project award: “This award is a testament to the expertise of our team combined with the strength of our global technology. The tolling system will make a major difference for reducing congestion, improving safety and enhancing the overall driving experience for millions of Victorians every day.”
The NEL is the biggest ever investment in Melbourne’s northeast, and it marks a significant step forward in improving mobility and sustainability for drivers and communities across the city of more than five million inhabitants. With over 135,000 vehicles per day, it is expected to be one of the busiest roads of the country once it opens.
Project scope
The scope of the barrier-free tolling system to be delivered by Kapsch TrafficCom includes multiple toll points across three toll zones, covering both tunnel and open road sections. The system will feature over 80 sensors across 27 lanes and eight gantries. The hardware and software delivered as part of the project enable precise vehicle detection, tracking, classification, and automatic number plate recognition – ensuring seamless tolling and optimized traffic flow.
Contract details
The contract, signed on 28 May 2025, includes both the delivery of the tolling system from mid-2025 through to 2028 and a 10-year operations and maintenance phase through 2038. For STC, the partnership with Kapsch TrafficCom ensures a reliable, proven solution backed by a team with global experience and a strong track record on major Australian infrastructure projects such as NorthConnex, WestConnex, and the West Gate Tunnel.
