Kapsch TrafficCom operates truck tolling system in UAE

- More than one million annual transactions processed
- Long-term operation and maintenance contract extends until 2029
- Free-flow tolling supports efficient freight transportation
Vienna/Ras Al Khaimah, September 15, 2026 – Kapsch TrafficCom continues to support freight mobility in the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah through the operation and maintenance of its free-flow truck tolling system.
Following the successful deployment of the solution in 2024, the company has been awarded a five-year operation and maintenance contract, ensuring continued support of the system until 2029.
"The successful operation of this system demonstrates the value of our long-term partnership with the Public Services Department of Ras Al Khaimah," says Carolin Treichl, EVP EMEA at Kapsch TrafficCom. "Together, we have created a reliable tolling solution that supports efficient freight transportation while delivering a seamless experience for road users."
The Kapsch TrafficCom solution replaced a traditional toll-booth-based system with modern free-flow tolling technology. Trucks can travel on the road network without stopping or slowing down at toll collection points, helping improve traffic flow and enabling faster movement of goods throughout the emirate.
The system combines roadside gantries, RFID technology, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras and back-office software to identify vehicles and process toll transactions automatically. It also includes a mobile application and web portal that allow users to manage journey and payments conveniently.
Today, the system processes approximately one million transactions annually and continues to support growing freight traffic volumes. Since Kapsch TrafficCom assumed responsibility for operations and maintenance, the number of passages processed by the system has increased by 10 to 15 percent, while the automation of toll collection and validation processes has contributed to greater operational efficiency.
Designed specifically for the demanding local environment, the solution operates reliably despite extreme temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius and challenging desert conditions, including frequent sandstorms. The continued performance of the system underscores the robustness of the technology and the effectiveness of the ongoing maintenance program.
