Kapsch puts free-flow toll system into operation in Chile

Santiago, 18 November 2025 – Kapsch TrafficCom, one of the world's leading providers of intelligent mobility solutions, has successfully completed the delivery of the electronic free-flow toll system (Multi Lane Free Flow – MLFF) for the Puente Industrial bridge, a concession operated by Aleática in the Bío region of Chile. At 2.5km, it is the longest bridge in the country, with a total structure length of 6.4km.
With its commissioning, the project for Puente Industrial contributes to a decisive step toward modernizing Chile's road infrastructure. The free-flow toll bridges enable automatic toll collection without stopping, contribute to traffic flow, and optimize the user experience.
The technological solution developed by Kapsch includes the installation of two toll gantries, one for each direction of travel. Each toll gantry is equipped with vehicle classification sensors, high-resolution cameras for image capture, DSRC antennas for reading on-board units, and local servers that record and transmit transactions in real time. The structures were designed to cover multiple lanes and hard shoulders, while also taking into account specific conditions such as the presence of cycle paths, which required the integration of control measures to prevent evasion.
Complementing this roadside infrastructure, Kapsch developed and integrated a complete back-office system consisting of two operational levels. The operational back office processes all transactions generated at the toll stations, including those without authorized means of payment, and enables the validation, classification, and consolidation of data with a capacity of up to 2,500 vehicles per hour and lane. The commercial back office, on the other hand, manages customer service, billing, interoperability with the National Traffic Register (RNUT), and the administration of the 120,000 on-board units that are distributed on a rental basis. This system also includes advanced functions for debt collection, account reconciliation, and mass communication with users, including email notifications.
Kapsch's solution is designed for more than 1.2 million transactions per month and has a total storage capacity of 7.3 TB, meeting the highest standards of efficiency, security, and scalability. In addition, interfaces to various payment methods such as Servipag, Banco Estado, Transbank, Santander, and BCI, as well as to in-person, telephone, and digital customer service channels, have been integrated.
According to Ramiro Virreira, Kapsch's Executive Vice President for Latin America, “With this implementation, Puente Industrial is positioning itself as a pioneer in the modernization of road transport by integrating world-class technology to optimize traffic management and provide users with a more efficient and safer experience.”
