Kapsch TrafficCom joins prestigious Spanish Mobility Lab Foundation

Vienna/Vitoria-Gasteiz, November 5, 2025 – Kapsch TrafficCom is proud to announce its official incorporation into the Vitoria-Gasteiz Araba Mobility Lab Foundation.
This foundation, a leading center for innovation in mobility, aims to provide spaces and infrastructure for testing and developing new solutions in urban mobility and logistics. It brings together public institutions, leading private companies, research centers and universities to collaborate on projects that improve transport systems and strengthen the local economy.
“We are very proud to be part of this foundation,” says Juan Zamakona, Kapsch's Managing Director for Spain and Portugal. “Over the years, we have established strong partnerships in Vitoria-Gasteiz, and this is a great opportunity to deepen our support for the historic territory of Álava, making travel smoother, safer and more efficient for everyone.”
Located in the heart of Álava, the Mobility Lab leverages Vitoria-Gasteiz's unique ecosystem in terms of infrastructure, technical expertise and commitment to sustainability. The city has been recognized as European Green Capital (2012) and Global Green City (2019), and is part of the EU's “Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities” initiative.
Recent projects in Vitoria-Gasteiz
Kapsch TrafficCom has been actively involved in several mobility projects in the city for a number of years. These include the modernization of traffic control systems and the deployment of intelligent mobility technologies. One of the most notable recent projects is a pilot project for a bus priority system based on connected vehicle technology, designed to reduce delays and improve the flow of public transport.
Mobility as a driver of regional growth
Álava and the Basque Country are known for their strong manufacturing industry, particularly in the automotive, capital goods, transport equipment and cutting-edge technology manufacturing sectors. The region contributes significantly to Spain's industrial machinery exports, with goods exports accounting for more than 37% of Basque GDP.
“Mobility is a key factor for growth in this region, whether it is to transport goods efficiently or to support the technology and industrial sectors,” adds Zamakona. “We look forward to bringing our global and local expertise to projects that drive sustainability, digitalization and smarter transport.”
A new chapter in collaboration
The decision to include Kapsch TrafficCom, approved by the Foundation's board of trustees, alongside Michelin, reflects a shared commitment to fostering dialogue and cooperation between sectors. Kapsch and Michelin are the first private companies to join the Foundation's board, marking a new stage in its development and expanding its capacity to deliver impactful mobility solutions, each in their own field of expertise.
