ITS technology by Kapsch TrafficCom drives innovation on Mexico highway

- Kapsch TrafficCom’s ITS technology enables optimized traffic management
- Vehicle integration system enhances road safety on the highway
Mexico City, August 5, 2025 – In a step toward modernizing road infrastructure in Mexico, an advanced Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) developed by Kapsch TrafficCom has been implemented on the Palmillas – Apaseo Highway, northwest of capital Mexico City.
The goal is to optimize the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of vehicular traffic through cutting-edge technology and a centralized management platform.
The project included the installation of 21 traffic cameras, six variable message signs, one weather station, two weigh-in-motion (WIM) stations, and five traffic counting points with axle-based classification. Additionally, a Vehicle Integrity System based on LPR (License Plate Recognition) cameras was implemented, allowing continuous vehicle tracking along the route. All these components are integrated into Kapsch TrafficCom’s EcoTrafiX™, which centralizes real-time monitoring and operational decision-making from a control center.
One of the most innovative elements of the system is the Vehicle Integrity System, which enables continuous vehicle tracking through strategically placed LPR cameras along the route and at toll plazas. This technology allows for the generation of origin-destination matrices, travel time calculations, detection of “lost” vehicles, and prevention of illegal entries or exits. The information generated by the system then enables real-time tracking of each vehicle, visibility of travel times for each subsection and the entire section, hourly occupancy levels, and queue times at toll plazas, all of which serve as support for operations and decision-making. In case of anomalies, the system automatically sends alerts to the control center, significantly enhancing road safety.
Thanks to this solution, user protection is increased in high-risk areas, wanted or blacklisted vehicles can be detected, and detailed information on routes, speeds, and travel times is obtained. Furthermore, the system can generate key environmental and operational performance indicators and integrate with toll data for auditing and evasion control.
