Kapsch TrafficCom ensures seamless tunnel operation in Florianopolis, Brazil

- Largest road infrastructure project in Brazil in recent years
- Automated operation helps guarantee safety and traffic flow in tunnels
Vienna, April 8, 2025 – Kapsch TrafficCom successfully implemented advanced tunnel management technology for the new greater Florianópolis ring road, to ensure the efficient operation for its four tunnels.
It is the first Brazilian deployment of the tunnel management system, which has been implemented in major projects around the globe.
“The Greater Florianópolis Ring Road is one of the main urban road complexes in Brazil in recent years, so we are very proud to have contributed to this project with our technology,” says Ramiro Virreira, Executive Vice President Latin America at Kapsch TrafficCom.
Managed by the Autopista Litoral Sul, a local concessioner owned by Arteris, the greater Florianópolis ring road stretches for 50 kilometers and includes four pairs of tunnels, each approximately one kilometer long, all of which have double lanes. It aims to divert heavy traffic from the BR-101 highway that runs along Florianópolis and the municipalities close to the Santa Catarina capital.
In addition to the tunnel management platform, Kapsch has supplied, installed, configured and put into operation all the ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) lighting and electromechanical equipment and subsystems, such as Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), fire detection and firefighting system, variable message signage signs and lane markers, supervision and control system with PLCs and remotes, abandonment signaling system, emergency telephony, ventilation and environmental sensing, lighting, and more.
“In practice, our system integrates the management of all the equipment and subsystems in the four tunnels, for an integrated, automated and proactive operation, which helps operators guarantee safety, traffic flow and the satisfaction of road users,” says David Niño, ITS Systems Engineering Manager at Kapsch TrafficCom. “Worldwide, almost 200 km of tunnels and more than 25,000 km of roads are monitored with our solutions for 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”
State-of-the-art technology
A benchmark in the transport technology sector worldwide, the technology by Kapsch TrafficCom offers a differentiated digital environment where operators can trigger faster responses to incidents and heavy flow situations, as well as day-to-day traffic management operations, all in a few clicks.
“It's a system that brings together all the subsystems needed for tunnel management in a single environment and provides a global view of the entire infrastructure through a single system, giving operators total situational awareness and control from a single interface,” Niño continues.
Tunnels present unique management challenges for operators in terms of traffic optimization, incident response, inspections, and monitoring. This requires an approach that makes it possible to obtain a 360° view of tunnel operations to ensure that management and incident response decisions are fast, effective and safe, and thus provide better overall experiences for drivers.
