Kapsch Surpasses 1 Million Free Flow Toll Transactions Per Day in Brazil

- Use of payment tags up nearly 70%
- Kapsch portfolio also includes traffic management in major Brazilian cities
Sao Paolo, June 15, 2026 – Since Kapsch first introduced Free Flow tolling technology to Brazil, more and more toll roads in the country have adopted its technology, and today its systems facilitate over 1 million transactions per day in the country
The pioneering implementation took place on BR-101 (Rio-Santos Highway), on a 170-km stretch between Ubatuba (SP) and Itaguaí (RJ), becoming Brazil’s first barrier-free toll system. This solution eliminates toll plazas and barriers, allowing vehicles to maintain their speed, thereby reducing traffic congestion, fuel consumption, and CO₂ emissions.
Since its implementation, the use of payment tags has increased by nearly 70% in two years, according to figures from ABEPAM (Brazilian Association of Automatic Payment Companies for Mobility), and there have been no reports of accidents related to toll collection—an important milestone for road safety.
The introduction of Free Flow technology in Brazil was the result of years of joint work between regulatory agencies with technological support from Kapsch, which has been operating similar systems for over 20 years in countries such as Austria, Chile, and the United States. The company played a crucial role in transferring technological know-how, coordinating technical visits, and ensuring that the solution met local requirements.
Since its first project, the company has participated in major Free Flow implementations across the country, both on major highways such as the Dutra and Sorocabana, as well as on state highways like those in the Serra Gaúcha region operated by the CSG concessionaire. This explains the enormous number of daily transactions processed, which requires robust and proven technology.
In addition to Free Flow, Kapsch has a strong presence in Brazil. The company has implemented various smart solutions for urban and interurban mobility in the country. Its portfolio includes traffic management systems in cities such as São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, and Ribeirão Preto, as well as large-scale projects like the Florianópolis Beltway, where it implemented advanced technology for tunnel management, ensuring safety and traffic flow in one of the country’s largest road complexes.
With a global presence in more than 20 countries, Kapsch has high expectations for Brazil. According to Ramiro Virreira, the company’s Executive Vice President for Latin America, “The milestone of 1 million daily transactions is just the beginning of a transformation that promises to make Brazilian roads safer, more efficient, and more connected.”
