Spanish city León modernizes urban traffic management with Kapsch TrafficCom

- Company to integrate existing and new hardware into traffic management system
- Contract value EUR 2,975 million, duration of three years
León, Spain, June 3, 2026 – The Castilian city of León has awarded a comprehensive traffic systems maintenance and modernization contract to Kapsch TrafficCom, reinforcing its commitment to innovation and integrated urban mobility.
The contract, valued at EUR 2.975 million, will run for three years, with an optional 1+1-year extension, and work has commenced on May 1. It covers the maintenance of all roadside traffic installations across the city, including controllers, while also expanding the infrastructure with new traffic cameras and virtual message signs (VMS).
“The City of León understands that mobility needs are changing and is preparing for it – we are proud to expand our existing relationship with the city,” said Juan Zamakona, General Director of Kapsch TrafficCom Iberia. “With this project, León is taking a decisive step toward an integrated, future-ready traffic system that can evolve as demands grow.”
A core element of the project is the full integration of all existing and new hardware into the EcoTrafiX traffic management system, creating a unified foundation for León’s traffic management. By consolidating data and operations, the city aims to integrate all traffic systems and enable a more adaptive, data-driven approach to mobility management. EcoTrafiX will be tailored to León’s specific requirements, supporting the city’s ambition to innovate its entire traffic ecosystem and respond to evolving mobility needs.
As part of the contract, the city’s traffic control center will be upgraded to support the expanded hardware base and the increased level of system integration. To ensure smooth operations and high service quality, the existing local team will be expanded by five additional experts, strengthening on-site operational capabilities and long-term support.
By focusing on innovation, system integration, and the intelligent use of data through EcoTrafiX, León is laying the groundwork for a smarter, more connected urban mobility strategy that benefits both operators and road users alike – a strategy further supported by the highest national and European quality standards through the selection of Kapsch TrafficCom as a partner.
