New toll infrastructure for highway in Basque Country, Spain

Vienna, October 2, 2025 – In June 2025, Kapsch TrafficCom was awarded a new contract for the renewal of the Zarautz Este toll collection area in Gipuzkoa, Basque Country.
The project, valued at EUR 3.3 million will be delivered over a period of 13 months and 2 weeks and will ensure comfortable toll payments for drivers on the AP-8 motorway, where the new toll collection area is located. The AP-8 motorway crosses the Basque Country from east to west and connects the French border with Donostia and Bilbao, major metropolitan areas.
This new contract represents another step forward for the company, following the successful delivery of the Irun Ventas, Irun MO and Orio toll renovation projects in December 2024, where improvements were made to the toll system, improving traffic flow and increasing the payment methods available to residents and tourists.
“We are proud to continue our collaboration in Gipuzkoa and contribute to the modernization of toll infrastructure,” said Juan Zamakona, VP and General Director for Iberia at Kapsch TrafficCom. “This project not only strengthens our tolling footprint in Iberia but also showcases our ability to deliver solutions under challenging conditions.”
The Zarautz Este segment of the AP-8 toll road is particularly busy during holiday periods and will coincide with two other major infrastructure works, making coordination a critical success factor. The project also underscores Kapsch’s commitment to delivering high-performance toll systems in complex environments.
The scope of the project includes a 50% share of civil works, executed by partner Construcciones Amenabar, and Kapsch TrafficCom, which will modernize the infrastructure and enhance operational efficiency.
Kapsch TrafficCom continues to demonstrate its technological leadership and reliability in the region, where it has carried out the renovation of six toll stations with a total of 55 lanes on the AP-8 motorway.
Kapsch TrafficCom is a globally renowned provider of transportation solutions for sustainable mobility with successful projects in more than 50 countries. Innovative solutions in the areas of tolling and traffic management contribute to a healthy world without congestion.
