Kapsch TrafficCom builds toll control infrastructure in Switzerland

Vienna, July 24, 2025 – Kapsch TrafficCom has begun construction of the new Swiss road collection system (ESTR).
Kapsch TrafficCom is supplying physical and digital infrastructure and state-of-the-art video sensors for stationary and mobile collection systems to enable efficient and seamless collection of truck tolls (performance-related heavy vehicle tolls, LSVA) throughout the country.
The contract was signed in April 2024 and includes a two-year design and construction phase with pilot operation until the end of 2025, as well as an eight-year operation and maintenance phase until the end of 2033. There is also an option to extend the contract for a further two years until the end of 2035. The total volume of the order amounts to 74.5 million euros.
Carolin Treichl, EVP EMEA at Kapsch TrafficCom, comments on the project: “We are very pleased about the successful cooperation with the Swiss authorities. This will enable Switzerland, through which a third of all transalpine freight deliveries pass, to collect the tax even more comprehensively.”
More than 80 border crossings and dozens of main and secondary roads will be covered by the new technology, enabling the Swiss Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG) to collect the LSVA reliably across the board. At the same time, truck companies benefit from accurate, correct, and reliable recording of their passages so that the tax can be billed correctly to all companies.
Project scope
The system is used to record the location and time of vehicles subject to tax in order to ultimately ensure the correct calculation of heavy vehicle taxes on Swiss roads. Stationary video sensors at 169 locations at Swiss border crossings and on the high- and low-level road network will record the location and time of passage, the license plate number, and the type of vehicle. This recording process will be documented with appropriate image material. A completely new support structure for the video sensor technology is being erected at 83 locations.
The stationary system is supplemented by 34 mobile recording vehicles that can be positioned anywhere in Switzerland at any time. In addition, a dedicated data center is being set up at the Swiss Federal Office of Information Technology (BIT) to process the collected data securely.
