Smart urban mobility for one of the largest cities in the state of São Paulo

Project period: From 2022
Client:

Ribeirão Preto City Council / TRANSERP

Location:

Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo, Brazil

Solution:

EcoTrafiX platform and traffic controllers

Scope

  • Implementation of the EcoTrafiX platform for traffic light control and bus priority
  • Installation of ITS equipment
  • Implementation of the Operational Control Centre
  • Training and system maintenance

The challenge

Ribeirão Preto needed to modernise mobility management along the city’s main public transport corridors. The project required the physical and logical integration of various technologies, including traffic light control, bus priority, video surveillance, variable message signs and communications infrastructure.

In addition to installing the equipment in the field, it was necessary to connect the subsystems to an Operational Control Centre to enable integrated urban traffic management. The length of the corridors and the diversity of the components required a central platform capable of integrating the various solutions.

Key figures

  • 26 km of urban roadways
  • 252 intersections
  • 84 Ecotrafix traffic controllers
  • 176 cameras for the Adaptive System at intersections

The solution

We have implemented our EcoTrafiX platform, connecting the various technological components involved within a single environment. The system integrates ETX traffic light controllers with priority for buses, enabling public transport operations and traffic light control to form part of an integrated architecture.

The solution is complemented by a CCTV system, which provides resources for traffic monitoring, and by variable message signs (VMS), used to provide information to road users.

These components are connected to the Operational Control Centre, creating a centralised environment for the supervision and management of the various subsystems. In this way, the project goes beyond the mere installation of individual pieces of equipment in the field and establishes an integrated technological architecture to support urban mobility operations.

Results for the city

The combination of a centralised infrastructure with advanced technology for smart mobility management creates the conditions for more dynamic management:

  • More efficient public transport through priority traffic light signals for buses. Intelligent traffic light control has the potential to reduce delays, improve traffic flow and alleviate urban congestion.
  • A centralised infrastructure to integrate the project’s key technological components and support the coordinated operation of traffic and public transport.
