Commercial carriers manage obligations that do not apply to passenger vehicles, including operating authority and permits, IFTA fuel tax reporting, registration in every state of operation, hours-of-service limits and weight restrictions that vary by jurisdiction.
Each requirement is verified at some point along the route: at terminal gates, weigh stations, ports, border crossings and toll facilities. Every verification point adds time and fuel cost. Because carriers are paid on delivery, delay translates directly into lost revenue.
Electronic logging requirements leave little flexibility when a driver's hours expire, and safe truck parking remains in short supply. Crash liability adds further exposure, with litigation that can extend for years. For fleets, any measurable reduction in risk carries direct financial value.
