New Swiss truck toll system goes live

- Heavy vehicle fee (LSVA III) to commence full operation after pilot phase
- Milestone for digitalization of Swiss toll collection
Vienna/Zurich, July 3, 2025 – Following an intensive pilot phase involving several thousand vehicles, the Swiss national truck toll system commenced full operation on June 1, 2025.
As part of a joint venture, Kapsch TrafficCom will supply up to 55,000 satellite-based on-board units (GNSS OBUs) for this purpose, which will be installed in Swiss trucks. The on-board unit uses satellite localisation to determine waypoints throughout the entire Swiss road network. The driving data is processed there and then transferred to the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG) for further processing and duty calculation.
“The start of live operations marks a significant milestone in the full digitalization of Swiss toll collection. With the new system, on-board units no longer need to be installed by workshops, but can now be installed independently, saving time and money,” explains Carolin Treichl, EVP EMEA at Kapsch TrafficCom.
The on-board unit from Kapsch TrafficCom is TÜV-certified and demonstrably the most sustainable in its class. The GNSS system designed by Kapsch TrafficCom is operated by NATRAS AG, a joint venture between Kapsch TrafficCom and LOSTnFOUND AG (part of AddSecure). NATRAS AG will operate and further optimize the toll system for a period of at least eight years.
