Challenge
Rodovia Presidente Dutra is the busiest highway in Brazil, as it connects the two biggest cities in in the country, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The section that crosses Guarulhos near Sao Paulo carries a significant volume of passenger and freight traffic every day.
Deploying the largest Free Flow tolling project in Brazil on one of the country's busiest highway corridors in an urban environment presented significant implementation challenges. The project required the installation of 19 tolling gantries and supporting infrastructure while maintaining uninterrupted traffic flow across the heavily traveled section.
Working within limited installation windows, ensuring safety for both motorists and construction crews, integrating multiple technology platforms, and calibrating a system demanded meticulous planning, close stakeholder coordination, and flawless execution.
Solution
The solution includes the roadside equipment and systems, as well as an operational back-office platform fully integrated with the client's commercial back office, supporting customer management and revenue collection processes.
Special developments were required for the Brazilian market, including validation rules and integration interfaces with payment methods mandated by local market requirements.
To ensure a successful transition to the new tolling model, Kapsch provided operational support during the first year following go-live, followed by five years of maintenance services.
