A smarter foundation for urban mobility
Sharjah’s continued urban growth required a modern traffic management environment capable of centralising junction supervision and adapting signal timings to changing traffic demand. Kapsch TrafficCom designed and integrated a scalable Smart Traffic Management System for the Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority, covering 50 traffic junctions equipped with EcoTrafiX 32 series traffic controllers. The solution combines central traffic management through EcoTrafiX, ITACA adaptive traffic control, regional signal coordination, CCTV-based monitoring and C-ITS priority capabilities within an integrated ICT architecture.
The Challenges:
SRTA required an integrated traffic management environment capable of supporting more efficient and coordinated operation of its urban traffic network. The project had to bring traffic-controller supervision, traffic detection, CCTV monitoring and C-ITS capabilities into a scalable architecture while providing the Traffic Control Center with centralized operational visibility. The system also needed to support different control strategies and allow signal timings to be adapted to changing traffic conditions.
The Project scope:
- Deployment and integration of 50 EcoTrafiX 32 series traffic controllers across 50 traffic junctions.
- Implementation of EcoTrafiX as the central traffic management and supervision platform.
- Integration of ITACA adaptive traffic-control capabilities.
- Regional traffic-signal coordination based on cycle, split and offset management.
- Deployment of 70 RIS-9260 Roadside ITS Station Platforms and five ITS-G5 on-board units.
- CCTV-based remote monitoring of traffic junctions from the Traffic Control Center.
- Delivery of training, technical documentation, project supervision and professional services.
- Three years of support and maintenance for the defined UTC, CCTV, communications and Traffic Control Center scope.

The Solution:
Kapsch integrated EcoTrafiX and ITACA into Sharjah’s traffic management environment. EcoTrafiX provides the central platform for traffic-network monitoring, supervision and operational control. ITACA applies advanced adaptive traffic-control algorithms to adjust signal operation according to available detector data and current traffic demand. The algorithms manage cycle, split and offset parameters to adapt junction timings, distribute green time and support coordination between junctions where network and traffic conditions permit.
The integrated architecture also connects traffic controllers, CCTV monitoring and C-ITS components, providing SRTA with a scalable foundation for operating the current system and incorporating future traffic-management services
