Solution
Dynac® ITS system for tunnel management
Scope
Implementation of a complete Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) for the operation and management of the four twin tunnels along the 50 km Greater Florianópolis Ring Road in Brazil. The project included the supply, installation, integration, configuration, and commissioning of all tunnel management, safety, traffic, and electromechanical systems.
The challenge
The Greater Florianópolis Ring Road was designed to divert heavy traffic away from the highly congested BR-101 corridor and improve mobility across the metropolitan region. The project faced significant engineering, environmental, and operational challenges, including:
- Preserving sensitive Atlantic Forest areas and minimizing impacts on indigenous communities.
- Integrating multiple safety, traffic, environmental, and electromechanical subsystems into a single operational environment.
- Ensuring maximum tunnel safety while maintaining traffic flow and minimizing disruptions for road users.
Key figures
4 twin tunnels
50 km in total
More than 20,000 workers involved during construction
Aprox. 12,410 vehicles per day (AADT)
The solution
Kapsch TrafficCom, delivered a fully integrated tunnel management solution that centralizes the operation of all tunnel infrastructure in a single platform.
The solution provides operators with complete situational awareness of the tunnel environment through a single interface, enabling faster and more coordinated responses to incidents, congestion, maintenance activities, and emergencies.
The solution integrates management, safety, environmental monitoring, communication, lighting, and operational control systems to create a highly automated and coordinated operating environment.
Innovation
At the core of the solution is Dynac®, Kapsch TrafficCom's advanced management platform for tunnels, roads, and bridges, deployed in Brazil for the first time through this project.
The platform innovates by combining three traditionally separate systems into a single operational environment:
- SCADA system for the supervision and control of electrical, electronic, and electromechanical assets.
- Incident Management System for event detection, workflow automation, and emergency response.
- Advanced Transportation Management System (ATMS) for traffic monitoring and operational decision-making.
Impact
The solution provides operators with complete situational awareness of the tunnel environment through a single interface, enabling faster and more coordinated responses to incidents, congestion, maintenance activities, and emergencies.
For road users, the project contributes to:
- Improved tunnel and highway safety.
- Better traffic flow and reduced congestion on BR-101.
- Shorter travel times across the Greater Florianópolis region.
- Reduced accident risk through proactive monitoring and automated incident management.
- Greater reliability for freight and passenger transportation.
Beyond the benefits for mobility, the project represents a milestone in Brazilian infrastructure by combining large-scale engineering works with state-of-the-art ITS technology to create a safer, more efficient and more sustainable transport corridor for Santa Catarina and Brazil.
