About the Role
Kapsch TrafficCom is seeking a highly motivated Field Technician role to support the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) for NYSDOT’s Transportation Management Center (TMC). This role involves hands-on technical work, troubleshooting, and oversight of ITS infrastructure to ensure reliable performance of the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) and ITS devices.
The technician will be based out of Binghamton and will travel to remote ITS sites as needed, including regular travel to Utica, to provide operational support.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist IT Network Administrator and Systems Engineer with ITS asset management and spare parts inventory.
- Provide equipment status reports and resolve trouble tickets/work orders for ITS operations.
- Troubleshoot ITS communication/network failures; upgrade, replace, configure, install, and repair ITS devices.
- Test ITS equipment such as Variable Message Signs (VMS) and Portable Variable Message Signs (PVMS), Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) Cameras and RTMS Detectors, which may include after-hours testing to minimize impacts to traffic operations.
- Conduct routine inspections of ITS hardware; submit monthly condition checklists.
- Investigate damage to ITS infrastructure caused by traffic incidents; assist in cost recovery efforts.
- Oversee ITS maintenance contractors and monitor daily work schedules.
- Support TMC managers during incidents, roadwork, and special events with real-time condition reporting.
- Provide technical input for ITS design projects and conduct site surveys as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
- Associate’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, Computer Science, or Information Technology; OR
- 2 years of full-time experience as a service technician in Telecom, Electrical Technology, or IT.
Skills & Abilities:
- Electronics troubleshooting and repair (modems, switches, routers).
- Ability to perform field work in varying terrain and weather conditions.
- Proficiency in MS Office and reading plans/schematics.
- Knowledge of utility stakeout language and the ability to interpret utility markings and field layouts.
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Valid driver’s license.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with telecommunications and IT systems, including wireless and fiber optic communication.
- Knowledge of electrical safety, codes, and safe working practices.
- Knowledge of or experience with basic networking concepts and equipment, including switches, firewalls, VPNs, VLANs, and general network troubleshooting.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Strong organizational and analytical skills
