Reduced delays for buses, improved commuter experience, scalable model for other cities

Next Generation funds within the Ciudades Conectadas project
The city of Vitoria-Gasteiz sought to improve the punctuality of its BRT system by reducing delays through a priority solution at intersections. This meant integrating new technology into the existing urban environment without disrupting daily traffic operations, while ensuring a scalable approach to enhance overall service efficiency.
In 2024, Kapsch TrafficCom Spain was awarded a pilot by TUVISA to implement Transit Signal Priority (TSP) through connected vehicle technology. The solution integrates the latest-generation Kapsch 5.9GHz roadside units (RIS-9160) and onboard V2X communication units (CBX-9160) with existing traffic management systems, coordinated by the EcoTrafiX™ Suite and Connected Mobility Control Center (CMCC). The system uses real-time GTFS data on bus schedules, position, speed, and delays to dynamically adjust traffic signals. This grants buses on Line 5 priority at a key intersection, reducing wait times and improving service reliability.
Key elements of the solution include:
