Satellite tolling.

Open-road toll collection via satellite.

In regions with large, open expanses or an especially extensive network of toll roads, using GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) satellite positioning makes both technical and commercial sense.

The costs of maintaining roads in sparsely populated regions with long stretches of roadways are normally quite high. Those infrastructure costs can be offset by levying tolls on trucks, i.e., the vehicles that cause the most wear and tear on the roads.

By integrating additional sensors into the systems, other applications can be added to the satellite-based toll collection solutions.

Automated solutions.

As opposed to toll collection systems based on DSRC (Dedicated Short-Range Communications), satellite positioning is used to determine the location of the on-board units (OBUs) in the vehicles. The data relevant for toll collection is sent to our back office via GSM/GPRS wireless technology. As soon as a vehicle enters a toll zone, it is automatically recorded by the system and the payment process is triggered. Depending on the rate model in effect, tolls may be calculated by distance, by vehicle class or weight, by time of day, or by traffic situation.

Ideal for all categories of roads.

Satellite-based toll collection can be used for all types of roads. The system allows additional routes to be integrated without any great difficulty, since satellite-based systems require less roadside infrastructure than DSRC systems. The GNSS on-board units are relatively expensive, and as such satellite toll collection is the perfect solution for select vehicle classes (those with a low total number of vehicles but long driving distances).

We also implement toll collection systems in which DSRC and satellite toll collection are combined.

End-to-end approach
  • Our toll collection systems are interoperable with other systems and meet international standards, including the highest safety standards.
  • Additional traffic management functionalities can be added to the base infrastructure.
  • We also offer our services for both technical and commercial system operation.
  • All core technologies are produced in-house.
