Mobile Tolling Services: Video Enhancement

Smartphones facilitate video-based toll collection.

Smartphones are used in Multi-Lane Free-Flow (MLFF) toll collection systems as an add-on component for systems designed to identify license plate numbers using video cameras (Automatic Number/License Plate Recognition, or ANPR/ALPR). In addition to added comfort for occasional users who previously paid the video tariff, there are numerous advantages for operators to integrate smartphones into the toll collection process: overall tolling performance is increased and operating costs are reduced. Investing in these mobile tolling services pays off quickly given that they significantly reduce the efforts needed for manual image validation and reduce the loss of toll revenue arising from manually unreadable license plate numbers.

The smartphone app is also able to integrate additional services ranging from traffic congestion warnings and payment of toll fees to individualized services for toll road users.


Automatic correlation of information.

Every time a vehicle passes through a toll collection point, two processes are initiated: Video cameras at the tolling station record an image of the license plate and send it to the back office system. Meanwhile, the smartphone app – using GNSS positioning (Global Navigation Satellite System) – detects that the driver has entered a geo zone and likewise transmits the passage to the back office system, where the two pieces of information are merged based on location and time. This avoids manual validation of the license plates and saves time and money.

We take an end-to-end approach, ensuring that smartphones are seamlessly integrated into toll collection systems. The proxy handling the communication between the smartphones and the back office system, a correlation module that can function either independently or as part of Image Processing Services (IPS), and the tools used in device and geo zone management can be easily integrated into existing systems.
