With air pollution in the UK representing one of the most significant environmental risks to human health, the UK government has set ambitious targets for reducing emissions from road traffic.
Conventional, infrastructure-centric solutions are not sufficient, as congestion and pollution levels remain high – despite the substantial investment constantly going into roadside-centric traffic management.
Clearly, increasing road capacities needs to be accompanied by measures that manage demand for that capacity; in other words, there is no managing congestion and pollution without managing traffic demand. This means they work best in combination, complementing and reinforcing each other.
