MPLS-TP for power utilities and rail

XTranIn order to answer the future trends and requirements of the power utilities and rail, OTN Systems has invested in research of the latest transport technology and developed XTran. MPLS-TP is currently being worldwide deployed and thoroughly tested at leading communication service providers. There's an emerging need for packet-oriented transport networks that would, at the very least, have similar deterministic connections like SDH/SONET.

The growing demand of bandwidth, the rise of newer technologies coupled with the mix of legacy protocols made it necessary to create a new transport platform. Since IP/MPLS is often utilized in the core, it is imperative that this transport ecosystem would be compatible with IP/MPLS. Two standardization bodies, IETF and ITU-T, eventually worked together and after an evolution of 5 years MPLS-TP is a well-defined standard.

OTN Systems has detected similarities between the network exigencies of the communication service providers and power utilities and rail. We have further defined and refined the requirements and applied it to the MPLS-TP standard. Since the standard allows for fine tuning or tailoring, OTN Systems provides you with the perfect answer.

MPLS-TP enables packet transport services with the degree of predictability, reliability and OAM tools found in the existing transport networks like SDH/SONET. How so?

IP/MPLS is around for the last 15 years and is a highly scalable, protocol agnostic data transport mechanism. Instead of using long network addresses with lookups in routing tables, to direct and switch the data across the network, short path labels are used. IP/MPLS generally operates between OSI layer 2 (data link layer) and layer 3 (network layer).

IP/MPLS has become exceedingly complex with a wide variety of protocols for traffic engineering and L2 or L3 enterprise VPNs.

IP/MPLS has its place in core networks however supporting these additional features in aggregation or transport networks can become time consuming, energy hogging and expensive.
MPLS-TP takes a subset of the IP/MPLS protocol suite and adds features associated with transport networks.
