Long-term partnership continues: Kapsch BusinessCom remains ICT managed services partner of Gas Connect Austria

Gas Connect Austria GmbH is one of the most important infrastructure companies in the country: It operates a 900-km high-pressure natural gas pipeline network in Austria. Natural gas is transported through these pipelines not just to Austria but also Germany, Italy, France, Slovenia, Croatia, and Hungary. To fully focus on its core business, Gas Connect Austria has relied on the ICT (information/communication/technology) solutions and services of Kapsch BusinessCom since 2012 and has assigned large segments of the operation and management of its network and IT infrastructure to Kapsch.

Vienna, September 19, 2018 – As an economically successful and stable partner with many years of managed services experience, Kapsch has succeeded in renewing the existing contract, together with some relevant extensions. These include a new media technology service, updates of the IT processes, and adjustments of the technical solutions to the current state of the art.

“Due to our important infrastructural task, our company bears great responsibility toward private and industrial gas consumers. We are a significant player in the European natural gas network and supply large areas of Europe through the central gas hub in Baumgarten. This is why absolute failure safety is a top priority for us. With Kapsch BusinessCom, we have a partner that we can rely on. Working with this local managed services partner also guarantees that data security complies with the latest Austrian standards,” explains Stefan Wagenhofer, managing director of Gas Connect Austria.

“We are pleased by the great trust that Gas Connect Austria has placed in us. The contract extension is a further step in a successful partnership for both parties. With our comprehensive national presence as a leading ICT service partner, we can also satisfy the new requirements in the best way possible,” explains Jochen Borenich, Member of the Management Board of Kapsch BusinessCom AG.

Gas Connect Austria relies on local sourcing

The managed services agreement between Gas Connect Austria and Kapsch covers numerous solutions and their associated services. The entire ICT infrastructure was redesigned in the past few years and all existing applications were migrated into this ICT system. During the initial phase, Kapsch took over the operation and management of the network and data-center infrastructure of several hundred national client systems across Austria, including mobile device management for employees, and operates a service desk. Furthermore, Kapsch provides the infrastructure for business applications, runs office applications, and is responsible for security, infrastructure capacity, and lifecycle management including the control station infrastructure. The managed services contract was extended by five years and enhanced with media technology services. The technical solutions were updated to the current state of the art, and the IT processes were adapted to the latest standards of service provision. As part of the contract extension, the data centers will also be relocated to another site in Vienna.

Due to the particularly high security requirements, Kapsch is also subject to very strict conditions (particularly concerning availability, IT security, and service levels). The complete operation and all associated services will be performed by Kapsch BusinessCom in compliance with established international standards such as ISO, ITIL, and PMA.

Gas Connect Austria operates a modern, high-performance high-pressure gas pipeline network with connections to Germany, Slovakia, Slovenia and Hungary and storage facilities. As well as operating transmission pipelines, the company is also responsible for an important part of the Austrian distribution network. Its core business is marketing gas transportation capacity at cross-border interconnection points, and providing capacity for domestic natural gas supply in Austria. As a transmission- and distribution system operator, Gas Connect Austria plays an important part both in the Austrian and European gas supply network. Existing gas infrastructure is regularly inspected, maintained and modernised in order to safeguard long-term security of supply. Gas Connect Austria offers a comprehensive range of logistics services tailored to the requirements of domestic and foreign market participants.
