Conventional tolling (Plaza tolling).

Despite a clear worldwide move towards Multi Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling, conventional tolling (Plaza tolling) is still widely being adopted in several regions where the overall legal/commercial framework may not be mature enough to remove all toll barriers. Therefore, plaza tolling is still vastly demanded, especially incorporating more efficient means of payment and high-speed dedicated ETC (Electronic Toll Collection) lanes. In some countries, plaza tolling with ETC is nowadays, and will be in the future, the natural platform to transition into MLFF, not only in greenfield, but also in brownfield scenarios. Mixed schemes, combining MLFF and conventional tolling, are also largely being observed around the world.

Nowadays, Kapsch TrafficCom has been at the forefront of a clear shift from purely manually operated traditional plaza tolling towards automated electronic toll collection (ETC) where road users pay tolls electronically while driving through the plaza without stopping, only reducing their speed.

We have delivered many of the most complex and modern conventional tolling solutions worldwide, ranging from manual toll collection by means of cash or card payments to electronic toll payment using ETC. Our SmartTOLL suite of products for plaza tolling has proved its efficiency and robustness through decades, combining the resilience of its fundamental concepts proven worldwide, but at the same time incorporating a renovated technology on its construction stack.

Modernization of traditional plaza tolling systems moving forward into fully electronic toll collection systems.

We have been modernizing existing traditional plaza tolling systems and upgrading them to allow electronic toll payment options (OBU/TAG, ANPR). We have also engineered tailor-made transitions to fully electronic toll collection systems. Moreover, we seamlessly integrate existing traditional plaza tolling systems, operated with or without barriers by various concession holders, into larger nationwide electronic tolling systems.

Kapsch TrafficCom keeps its focus in a variety of different solutions for traditional plaza tolling, ranging from manual toll collection by means of cash or card payments to combined installations with electronic toll collection systems, mixing it with MLFF, and addressing new forms of innovation on this product, to make it even more efficient and reliable for the next decade. We are also heavily investing in integrating all our experience developed in customer management on MLFF implementations, into plaza tolling ETC modules.
