Because of the declining effectiveness of gas taxes as a means to fund transportation infrastructure, Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT) tax is envisioned as a possible replacement for gas tax revenues at some point in the future. VMT would charge motorists for road consumption based on actual distance traveled. Additional parameters, such as vehicle emissions or time of day may also be incorporated in such a scheme.
Kapsch TrafficCom products and solutions support the full range of road user charging policies: based on distance traveled, or for infrastructure use such as bridges or tunnels, or based on time, passage, emissions or traffic-dependent, or for zones, cordons, corridors, restricted access areas, or for parking and/or payment of services. Kapsch equipment and systems are flexible to handle a variety of charging systems in combination and encompassing a wide geographical area and can be configured for single lane or multi-lane free-flow, even in the city center.
