"South Africa is a clear growth market for us. With the Gauteng project, Kapsch TrafficCom is proving its leading position as an international toll supplier", emphasises Andre Laux, CEO of the Kapsch TrafficCom Sweden. "Thanks to our extensive expertise in traffic telematics and strong local partners, we are in a position to offer a system that can satisfy even the highest quality demands. At the same time, we have in Traffic Management Technologies a joint venture partner who is intimately familiar with the South African market. With these initial conditions in place, we have succeeded in becoming the best bidder in the tendering procedure in terms of quality and budget".
Kapsch toll system strengthens the economic heart of South Africa
The Gauteng region, home to the cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria, is one of South Africa's most important economic regions. In the course of the toll project, the ETC consortium will build an extensive modern toll solution extending a distance of 180 kilometres by 2011; it will record both trucks and cars. In order to guarantee the long-term success of the project, the ETC consortium will work closely with the South African motorway operator SANRAL (South African National Roads Agency Limited) and other South African government authorities during the implementation phase.
The goal of this project is the implementation of an innovative toll system that will strengthen the region’s competitive ability and the exporters located there in the long term. Thanks to the cooperation with local partners, a large portion of the value created will remain at home, with a multitude of new jobs being created over the 18-month implementation period. The Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project will be financed through loans, which will be paid off using income from the toll system.
