In the period of October 2011 to October 2013, Kapsch TrafficCom will install a total of 38 toll stations for a new, fully electronic toll collection system for multi-lane free-flow traffic – doing away with the need for manual toll collection. In the future, tolls will be collected from all vehicles using the more than 100 kilometres length main route of this new highway. The company will subsequently provide technical operation and maintenance of the system for Portuguese company ASCENDI for five years.
"Portugal has been an interesting market for us for a very long time. Many years ago, for example, Kapsch made the existing toll collection system in Portugal compatible with the rest of Europe. There are now more than 2.7 million on-board units in use on Portuguese roads of which Kapsch TrafficCom has delivered 450,000 units to date. These guarantee smooth interoperability with other systems", says Michael Gschnitzer, Sales Director of Kapsch TrafficCom.
ASCENDI network currently includes seven concessions in Portugal. Together, they are responsible for more than 1,370 kilometres of the primary road network in Portugal, beyond that Ascendi stands for the biggest private multi-lane free-flow Operator in Europe.
