GSM-R was standardized by the International Union of Railways (UIC) with the support of the European Railway Agency to help railway operators provide internationally interoperable and safe railway networks.
Kapsch CarrierCom’s GSM-R network now covers around 70,000km of track and includes the largest GSM-R network projects in Europe, Africa and Asia. Our GSM-R network solution comprises GSM-R access infrastructure nodes such as the Base Station Controller (BSC), the Trans-Coding Unit (TCU), the Base Transceiver Station (BTS), a Core solution based on 3GPP Release 4 architecture using an ATCA platform, the Subscriber and Configuration Management solution. We also provide service capabilities including design, implementation, maintenance and operation.
Our infrastructure includes features that provide secure and reliable wireless communications between railway workers as well as the communication channel for the next-generation of railway control and signaling technology, the European Railway Traffic Management System (ERTMS). The European Train Control System (ETCS), which is part of ERTMS, is the system for signaling, control and train warning designed to replace incompatible signaling systems used by railways in Europe and increasingly around the world.
