Following a successful installation at GPs’ surgeries: Kapsch BusinessCom now also offers a complete e-card infrastructure package for around a further 1,000 health service providers

Following the integration of e-card at doctors’ surgeries, Kapsch BusinessCom is now also heavily involved in introducing the system at all other health service providers across the country. This stage concerns the Austria-wide connection of hospitals, rehabilitation clinics, laboratories and old people’s homes to the e-card system. Kapsch is involved in the installation of the entire e-card infrastructure, which it manages with its partners Telekom Austria, Tele2 and UPC Business (formerly Inode). This will allow all health service providers to be connected to the e-card system and its applications via an eHi-Net connection, quickly and in a standardised format.

As already achieved for local GPs, our solution is now also significantly simplifying administration at other health service providers, which now have the possibility to use the e-card infrastructure and its applications. Kapsch offers a complete package for the installation and maintenance of this infrastructure,” explains Dr. Kari Kapsch, Chairman of the Board of Kapsch BusinessCom. The e-card infrastructure has already been successfully implemented across Austria at 11,230 local GPs’ surgeries.

One of the first e-card services, which was specially developed by the central association and its subsidiary SVC, is the insurance data query service (VDAS). This allows all insurance-related details to be read by the e-card system in “real time” as soon as a patient is admitted to hospital.

By integrating the “e-card appliance” (eHI-Net connection, sGINA and LAN card reader), Kapsch offers health service providers the possibility to use other e-card services to improve patient care: Examples of this are the medication approval service (ABS), electronic payments and e-Medication. The e-card infrastructure can also be used for secure communication between the health service providers.

Kapsch services for implementation of the e-card
Kapsch is the only system integrator to supply and deliver the necessary hardware and software on site. Kapsch configures the necessary hardware in advance: the eHI-Net router (e-health interconnection network), the sGINA (server-based health information network adapter - comprising server hardware and the software of SVC for a maximum of 1,000 card readers) and the mGINA for a maximum of 20 card readers, as well as the LAN card reader. Tests are then carried out to ensure that everything is functioning properly.

Kapsch is also responsible for the installation, maintenance and servicing. This includes the systems and system components of the solution, receiving fault reports as well as analysing, diagnosing and remedying faults and errors. Errors can be analysed and remedied quickly and easily across Austria, both by remote access and on site, by Kapsch BusinessCom customer services.
