Over the last almost 20 years, Kapsch has compiled significant experience in the specialized sector of road traffic telematics, with references in the areas of tolling solutions (electronic and manual), urban traffic solutions, ITS and telematics solutions, operations and in components sales. With references in 41 countries on five continents, and with about 64 million delivered on-board units (OBUs), Kapsch TrafficCom has positioned itself among the leading suppliers of ETC systems worldwide.
In Czech Republic Kapsch has designed, developed, manufactured, installed, integrated and implemented this complex, multi-lane free-flow electronic toll collection system in only nine months. This included setting up a nationwide distribution network for On Board Units with pre- and post-pay capabilities, as well as establishing multilingual support services. Kapsch provides the complete operation services for the Czech Republic since January 2007. The total length of contract is 10 years.
In 2009 Kapsch equipped Czech motorways D1, D2 and D5 with a total of 46 variable information signs. Additional 30 variable information signs, which will be installed by mid-2010 on the Czech motorways D1, D2 and D5. For traffic management and traffic planning purposes accurate real-time as well as historical traffic data are generated on basis of the electronic toll system. For this the Kapsch Telematics Platform is being used allowing the Czech road authority (ŘSD ČR) to capture travel times, level-of-service, traffic statistics as well as traffic flow analysis data for the entire tolled road network in a cost efficient manner and feed that data via open XML interfaces to the Czech National Traffic Management Center. There the data are being used for controlling traffic and to plan traffic infrastructure in line with demand. The implementation of the original contracted Traffic Management System for the Czech most used highway D1 (section 0 – 246,8 km) was stopped by the Czech Ministry of Transportation due the construction of the Prague ring-road.
In 2008 Kapsch has implemented a hybrid pilot system, Kapsch Area, to test future charging schemes with up to 10.000 test users. By testing satellite positioning technology (GNSS) in combination with the existing DSRC technology the road authority is moving towards a hybrid system concept providing even more flexibility. Using the two technologies together in an integrated manner will allow the Czech road authority (ŘSD ČR) to accommodate changing transport policy needs in the Czech Republic now and for many years to come.
