Interoperability

Interoperability shall ensure that users equipped for an electronic fee collection system in a specific country or area, can automatically be charged the toll due in other areas or countries, without having to install additional in-vehicle On-Board Equipment for this purpose. This process is similar to "roaming", commonly practiced in the telecommunications industry. In electronic fee collection, interoperability includes having standardised and compatible platforms on three levels: technical, contractual and operational. This requires too that the offerings of systems manufacturers must be sufficiently technically compatible.

Kapsch TrafficCom, as one of Europe’s manufacturers of technology and systems for electronic fee collection, is an active supporter of efforts and activities in standardisation to further the European goals of interoperability - one contract, one device. The company participates in a number of national and international committees as well as technical demonstrations and tests.

Kapsch TrafficCom applications are based on the European standards for 5.8 GHz microwave DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communication), established by CEN TC 278 and ETSI. Currently this microwave technology is the only technology for electronic toll collection which follows the specific standards for Road Transport and Traffic Telematics (Intelligent Transport Systems).
