Single Lane Systems
Electronic single lane systems enable properly equipped vehicles to drive through specifically designated lanes at toll plazas without the need to stop the vehicle to pay. This is made possible by means of communication between a microwave transceiver installed in the respective lane and an in-vehicle On Board Unit.
Electronic single lane systems generally increase the traffic throughput, reduce traffic congestion and the emissions caused and enable an extension to manual toll plazas, since the existing infrastructure may be used for electronic as well as manual payment. This can even happen lane by lane, allowing for smooth upgrading by the operating company.
To deter potential toll evasion two primary methods of automatic enforcement are offered, ranging from barrier based systems to single lane free flow with image based or video enforcement. Contrary to the obstacle created by a barrier, in the case of video enforcement the vehicle with an invalid on board unit is identified via license plate recognition without interference to the flowing traffic.
