Austria’s Nationwide Truck Toll System

In June 2002, ASFINAG, Austria’s national road authority charged with planning, financing, building and maintenance of the highway network, awarded a contract for the installation and operation of a fully electronic nationwide toll system for heavy goods vehicles with a maximum permissible laden weight of 3,5 tons. to Autostrade S.p.A. with Kapsch TrafficCom AG as the turn-key system supplier.

Kapsch TrafficCom’s scope of works includes the system concept and design, all construction and steel work, site acquisition and roll-out, planning, the complete installation of the infrastructure including critical communication components, data networks LAN/WAN, development, manufacture and delivery of the DSRC roadside and in-vehicle devices, all roadside related software applications, data security, points of sale equipment, the entire enforcement system including stationary and mobile devices, LPR/OCR, an enforcement central system, the beacon central system supporting the required interface to the central billing system.

The technology chosen was a Dedicated Short Range Communication 5,8 GHz microwave solution that uses a simple, user-installable On Board Unit (OBU) and communication points located throughout Austria’s interurban highway network. The complete length of the Austrian highway network - approximately 2.000 km - is equipped with the system from Kapsch TrafficCom.

The Austrian Truck Toll System started commercial operation on January 1, 2004 on schedule. Kapsch TrafficCom continues to be responsible fort he technical operation of this system. The return on investment for ASFINAG occurred in only 9 months - again demonstrating the expertise of Kapsch as a solutions supplier of complete and complex nationwide systems.
