Multi Lane Free Flow ETC System

Systems for the electronic toll collection (ETC) in a multi-lane free-flow (MLFF) environment allow for toll collection without any interference to the traffic flow by gathering and processing tolling data for a vehicle electronically and fully automatically. No toll plazas are necessary and vehicles need not reduce speed and may even change lanes while passing through the toll zone. The system can also simultaneously process several vehicles passing the toll point at the same time.

The benefit of MLFF systems is to keep traffic flowing, achieving maximum throughput on the highway and to help to reduce traffic congestion due to toll plazas or unnecessary emissions from idling vehicles.

To meet the demands of a broader spectrum of use cases such as road user charging on highways, main roads with heavy traffic, rural roads or road user and parking charging in urban areas) Kapsch TrafficCom has created a system based on various technologies combining the benefits of microwave technology, satellite positioning, video technology in a fully-integrated combined system. This approach allows to the optimal base technology for each use case while enabling interoperability between the systems of different technologies.

Kapsch Highway is a microwave DSRC based ETC MLFF system which offers highest reliability and accuracy as well as low-cost and easy-to-install on-board units, and is best suited for tolling on highways. If the road network to be charged is expanded to rural roads, a satellite-based ETC MLFF system extension is required, which still enables interoperability. Kapsch Area is a combined DSRC and GPS/GNSS-based ETC system and provides enhanced flexibility and minimal roadside equipment. This unique integrated approach allows road operators to introduce new tolling schemes easily step by step without loosing interoperability among systems applying different technologies.

The Kapsch portfolio of ETC MLFF systems is completed by system design, integration servces as well as the entire technical and commercial operation of the system.
