Single Lane ETC System

Single-lane ETC system are usually used to upgrade existing manual toll collection systems. Single-lane ETC systems enable the collection of tolls from vehicles equipped with an on-board unit (OBU) when driving through specifically designated lanes at toll plazas without requiring the vehicle to stop. Within each lane, microwave DSRC transceivers are mounted to provide a communication zone for the OBUs mounted in the vehicles. When a vehicle passes through the toll collection zone, the transceiver reads the OBU identity and other data. The lane is also equipped with supporting equipment for detecting approaching vehicles and measuring the vehicle class depending on what is required by the customer.

Single-lane ETC systems generally increase the traffic throughput, reduce traffic congestion and the emissions caused and enable an extension to manual toll plazas, utilizing existing infrastructure.

In order to deter potential toll evasion the automatic enforcement is offered either with barrier based systems or with image-based or video enforcement.

Kapsch TrafficCom supplies products and systems compliant to the European standard CENTC278 for Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) at 5.8 GHz and is specialized in creating cost-effective and reliable single-lane ETC systems, including:
