Traffic Surveillance

The issues of traffic safety and security have become increasingly important. Traffic safety focuses on avoidance of traffic accidents, reduction in the number and type of secondary accidents, minimizing collateral damage and preparedness in the event of an emergency. Monitoring road events can lead to the timely management of critical on-road situations.

To handle these areas of road traffic telematics the same technologies used for ETC can be employed. As a specialist in ETC for over 15 years, Kapsch TrafficCom contributes its expertise and utilizes its technology to assist in the prevention and reduction of road accidents.

Our traffic surveillance systems aim, among others, to ensure the continuous flow of traffic to reduce the risk of secondary accidents or accidents caused by dangerous road conditions by using variable message signs to inform drivers of hazardous conditions and congestion and to adjust speed limits. The additional information enables the responsible road operators or authorities to influence the traffic situation and thereby enhance safety and reduce environmental damage by reducing congestion. Our video detection system allows to detect certain predefined events by analyzing images from standard video-surveillance cameras and combines video detection, video storage and streaming in one system.

Current applications include:

Section Control: to reduce the risks of speeding by monitoring the average speed on a road section allows for precise speed enforcement. This application can be easily added to an existing electronic tolling system in multi lane free flow environment (open road tolling).

Detection of Wrong-Way Drivers: The driving direction of each vehicle is automatically determined by sensors. If a vehicle is detected driving in the wrong direction, immediate action can take place to alarm the police and warn drivers also travelling on that particular stretch of road.

Hazardous Goods Management (HGM): Continuous tracking of hazardous material transports and monitoring of transports according to predefined routes, corridors, and exclusion areas will facilitate emergency responses in case of incidents. A monitoring centre can communicate rapidly with police and fire authorities, providing precise information on the nature of the hazard and the exact location of an incident.
