Unifying solution

The USP serves both as a classical SS7 node and as a new IP network element for truly unified networking. From the perspective of the IP network, the USP serves as a proxy for the SS7 side, so that circuit-switched elements of the network can transparently communicate with packet-based elements just as if they were traditional circuit-switched nodes.

The USP (Universal Signaling Point) currently provides the following functionalities:

• BB-STP (BroadBand STP),
• UNPM (Universal Number Portability Master) and
• SG (Signaling Gateway),
• SS7 Router functionality

Each USP System can be configured to perform any of these services in 2003 releases. The services can be configured for independent or concurrent operation.
